THE HOLY SCRIPTURES

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints accepts the following as the canon of Holy Scripture:

The Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments.

The Book of Mormon – a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible.  It contains the writings of prophets in ancient times. One of them, Lehi, lived in Jerusalem about 600 BC. At God's command, Lehi led a small group to the American continent. There they developed into a great nation with prophets. The Book of Mormon is a collection of the writings of the prophets and leaders of this civilization. It is named after Mormon, one of the last of these ancient prophets. The essential message of the Book of Mormon, apart from being a chronicle of the people there and of their prophets, concerns the mission of Jesus Christ, His presence for a time amongst the people in America following His resurrection, and His teachings.  Together with the Bible, The Book of Mormon witnesses that Jesus Christ really lived and that he is the Son of God and the redeemer of all mankind.

The Doctrine and Covenants – a collection of divine revelations and inspired explanations, which have been given from God to prophets in the 19th century onwards to establish and guide the Church in the latter days.

The Pearl of Great Price – a selection of revelations, translations and writings by Joseph Smith.
