Within the framework of Church membership, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers people the prospect of contracting an eternal marriage which is for “time and all eternity” and not "until death us do part".
Based on Christ's statement to Peter "I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven" (Matthew 16:19), eternal marriages are contracted by divine authority. Such an eternal marriage will also be valid in the next life and the family can exist forever.
The prerequisites for this are a temple or “House of the Lord” as the place for marriage to be performed, personal qualification, i.e. a life based on Christian principles, and priesthood authority (see
Temples). All the family members are included in this eternal possibility on the same conditions.
